Some sporting locations become part of the event itself.
It might be a distinctive golf hole, a wooded section of a cycling route, a well-known fishing peg, a difficult climb, a windswept ridge or a particular view that tells competitors exactly where they are.
At Little World Workshop, I create bespoke handmade dioramas of memorable sporting landscapes and outdoor locations for clubs, competitions and events across the UK.
Rather than another conventional cup or trophy, a bespoke diorama can recreate a place that means something to the people taking part — the scenery they recognise, compete in and remember.
Each piece is individually designed and made by hand in my Surrey workshop.
The best sporting dioramas don’t necessarily need to show the competitors.
Often, it’s the landscape that holds the memories.
The bend in the trail where the trees suddenly open onto a view. The climb that everyone remembers. The bank beside a well-known fishing swim. The bunker, stream and old oak surrounding a distinctive green. The exposed ridge that tells runners they’re nearly at the summit.
These are the details that can make a location instantly recognisable to someone who has been there.
Perhaps there’s a particular hole everyone at the club knows. A peg where championships have been decided. A climb competitors dread and remember in equal measure. A river section, ridge, trail, cross-country fence or stretch of coastline that has become inseparable from your event.
Using photographs and other reference material, I recreate that scenery as a three-dimensional miniature landscape, concentrating on the shapes, colours, terrain and distinctive natural features that give the location its character.
The result is something made specifically for your club or event: a trophy as unique as the place where it was won.
For golf, that might be the signature hole, with its bunkers, green and the little bridge over the stream, or the halfway hut where every round pauses.
For an angling competition, it could be a well-known peg or swim on the club lake, or the stretch of river that has hosted the match for years.
For cycling, it might be the climb that defines the event, a distinctive bend in the road, a memorable descent or the view competitors encounter as they reach the summit.
For fell and trail running, it could be a familiar climb, ridge, checkpoint, river crossing or section of trail that competitors recognise instantly.
For canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding, it might be a familiar river section, a run of rapids, a lake, river bend or distinctive stretch of coastline.
For equestrian events, it could be a memorable section of a cross-country course, a water complex or a distinctive fence set within the surrounding landscape.
And for other outdoor sports, the starting point is the same: finding the piece of landscape that belongs to your event.
Each award can be created as a bespoke diorama, presented on a wooden plinth or displayed under glass, with an engraved plaque recording the event, winner and year.
It’s a trophy connected to the place where the competition happened — made to be lifted, admired and kept long after the scores, times and results are forgotten.
Custom sporting dioramas can be created for a wide variety of outdoor sports and activities, including:
If your sport takes place in a landscape that participants recognise and remember, there is a good chance it can become a Little World.
A bespoke landscape diorama can provide something very different from the usual trophy, shield or presentation piece.
It could become the winner’s trophy for an annual competition, celebrate a significant club anniversary or mark a particularly important event.
A club might commission a miniature of a well-known part of its course or grounds as a retirement or long-service presentation. An event organiser might choose the defining section of a route for a winner’s award. A committee might commission one to recognise a volunteer, captain or long-standing member.
There are possibilities beyond prizes, too. A diorama could commemorate the history of an event, be displayed permanently in a clubhouse, or be presented to a sponsor or someone who has made an important contribution to a club.
For recurring competitions, we can also discuss designs intended to become an established part of the event — something distinctive to your club or competition that winners will recognise and want to take home.
My focus is on the location rather than miniature portraits of the competitors.
Trees, rocks, water, tracks, paths, banks, hedges, fields, vegetation and changes in elevation can all contribute to making somewhere recognisable.
That makes countryside and outdoor sporting locations particularly suited to this type of diorama.
A tiny runner or cyclist isn’t what makes a famous climb or trail recognisable. It’s the gradient, route, trees, rocks and landscape around it.
Likewise, an angler doesn’t make a particular fishing spot unique. The shape of the bank, the water, surrounding vegetation and familiar features do.
The aim is to find the details that make someone who knows the location look at the finished piece and immediately recognise it.
You don’t need architectural drawings or detailed plans to enquire about a commission.
Good photographs are usually the most useful starting point. Images taken from several directions help me understand the terrain, vegetation, colours and relationship between the different features.
Maps, route information, aerial photographs and event photographs can also be useful references.
From these, I’ll look at what makes the location distinctive and suggest how it could be represented effectively as a miniature scene.
Not every detail needs to be reproduced. Part of creating a bespoke piece is deciding what matters: which features make the location recognisable and which can be simplified without losing its character.
Every Little World Workshop diorama is individually designed and made by hand in my Surrey workshop for clubs, organisations and events across the UK.
I use a mixture of traditional model-making techniques and materials to build up the terrain, water, vegetation and other scenic details. Materials and methods vary according to the landscape I’m recreating rather than following a fixed formula for every piece.
The result isn’t a mass-produced trophy that could belong to any competition.
It’s a bespoke miniature of your place — somewhere connected specifically with your club, your event and the people who take part in it.
If you’re a club manager, club secretary, captain, committee member, competition organiser, race organiser or event organiser, and you’re looking for something more distinctive than the usual trophy or presentation piece, tell me about your event.
Get in touch and tell me what you have in mind and what makes the location important. I’ll look at how it could work as a bespoke diorama and discuss the design, presentation, approximate size and likely cost with you.
Whether you’re choosing an award for an annual competition, organising a one-off sporting event, marking a club anniversary or looking for a special presentation piece, the starting point is simple: show me the place your competitors will remember.
