Every great railway layout tells a story — but it’s the scenery that convinces people the railway really belongs there.

A convincing model railway is about far more than track and trains. It’s the gently sloping embankment leading the eye towards a distant station, the weathered stone bridge that has carried locomotives for generations, the overgrown lineside ditch, the hedgerows dividing fields and the mature trees that frame a favourite viewing angle. Together they create a landscape that feels as though it has existed long before the first train arrived.

Whether you’re building a compact branch line, a busy main line terminus, a preserved railway or a quiet industrial siding, I create handcrafted scenery that gives your railway a genuine sense of place.

Two Ways to Commission

Bespoke Commissions or Workshop Originals?

Not every modeller needs a fully bespoke commission, and not every project needs to start from scratch.

Workshop Originals are my own handcrafted scenery designs, created for modellers who want beautifully finished pieces that can be added to their layout with minimal effort. They typically include smaller scenic details such as lineside huts, ponds, bridges, embankments and other landscape features. Each piece is individually built, painted and weathered by hand, then supplied ready to be fixed into place, allowing you to blend it naturally into your existing scenery.

Bespoke commissions are something quite different. Rather than adapting one of my existing designs, I create scenery specifically for your railway, taking into account your layout, available space, operating era and the story you want your railway to tell. Commissions are often larger or more complex projects, such as station halts, engine sheds, industrial buildings, bridges, disused mine workings or complete scenic features designed to become focal points on a layout. They arrive fully finished, although larger commissions may require some simple integration with your existing landscape.

Whichever option you choose, every piece is handcrafted in my Surrey workshop with the same attention to realism, atmosphere and detail.

Natural-looking earthworks are the backbone of believable railway scenery. I model weathered rock faces, embankment slopes, retaining walls and ballast shoulders, carefully blended into the surrounding landscape using realistic textures, static grass, ballast transitions and natural vegetation, avoiding the abrupt changes that can make a layout look artificial.

Vegetation

Trees, Hedges & Hedgerows

Hand-made trees, dense woodland, pollarded willows, hedgerows and seasonal foliage — all scaled to suit your layout.

Water

Water, Ponds & Trackside Ditches

Streams passing beneath stone bridges, drainage ditches beside the permanent way, mill ponds, canals, flooded quarries and quiet rivers all add movement and atmosphere to a layout. I use layered resins, textures and subtle colour variation to create the illusion of depth.

OO Gauge, N Gauge & Narrow Gauge

I work in the most common British railway scales:

— OO gauge — the most popular UK scale. Ideal for detailed layouts with plenty of character.
— N gauge — smaller but increasingly popular, perfect for modellers with limited space.
— Narrow gauge — great for industrial, slate or rural railway subjects.

Whether you’re modelling the GWR, LNER, LMS, Southern Railway, BR Steam, BR Blue or a modern image layout, every scenic element is scaled to suit your chosen period and gauge. I scale every element to match your chosen gauge, including trees, buildings, figures and vehicles, so the scene reads correctly from every angle.

Share Your Track Plan & Vision

We start with a conversation — ideally with photos, sketches, a track plan, or even just a description of the railway you want to create. I'll ask about your chosen railway company, operating era, geographic location, season, scenic inspiration and how trains move around the layout. Understanding these details helps ensure the landscape feels like a natural setting for your railway, rather than simply scenery placed around the track.

Review a Bespoke Design Proposal

I put together a clear proposal covering the scenic scope, suggested materials, scale, timescale and cost. Nothing is built until you're happy with the plan.

Watch Your Scenery Take Shape

As the build progresses you'll see the landscape gradually evolve — from shaped landforms and retaining walls through to static grass, shrubs, mature trees and the countless small details that bring a railway to life.

Every commission is priced individually because every layout is different. Small scenic buildings and trackside features typically start from around £50, larger and complex scenes priced on request.

I'll always give you a written estimate and timescale before starting.

Lead times vary depending on complexity, but I'll be honest about availability from the first conversation.

What scales do you work in?

Mostly OO gauge, N gauge and narrow gauge, but I can work to other scales if you have a specific project in mind.

Can you work on an existing layout?

Yes. I can build scenery in sections that you can transport and install, or — if you're local to Surrey — I can work directly on the layout in situ.

How much does model railway scenery cost?

Small scenic dioramas start from £50. Larger detailed scenes are priced after we discuss the scope. I provide a fixed quote before starting.

How long does a commission take?

Depending on size and complexity, between a few weeks and a couple of months. I'll give you a clear timescale in the proposal.

Do you build full layouts or just scenery?

I specialise in scenery and scenic groundwork. I can work alongside your track and wiring, but I do not install track, point motors or electrics myself.

Can you match my existing scenery?

Yes. Whether your layout already uses static grass, foam foliage, natural materials or commercial scenic products, I can blend new scenery with the existing landscape so additions feel like they've always been part of the railway.

Can you match a particular region or prototype?

Yes. Whether you're modelling the West Country, Welsh narrow gauge, East Anglia, the Scottish Highlands or a specific real location, I can adapt the landscape, stonework, vegetation and buildings to suit the character of that region.
