Fully Finished Scenery

Finished, Detailed and Ready to Place

These aren’t kits, and they’re not unfinished 3D prints waiting for you to build, paint and weather them yourself.

Every piece of Little World Workshop scenery arrives fully finished. The building, painting, weathering, vegetation and scenic work have already been done by hand before it leaves the workshop. Where a piece includes lighting, that’s wired and tested too.

Take it out of the box, place it on your layout, and it’s done.

Handmade means more than “not a kit”.

Each piece is built one at a time in my Surrey workshop, using a mix of traditional hand-carving and modern tools. Some structural elements (a hut shell, a base) may start out 3D printed or cast, others are built from scratch, but everything from there is done entirely by hand: groundwork is mixed and layered rather than poured from a tin, foliage is planted rather than moulded, and every piece is individually painted, weathered and finished before it’s ready to place.

Some wall-climbing vegetation on my huts, for example, is built up from fine nylon threads coated in sawdust and layered in different green tones, so no two walls are covered in quite the same way and no two climbing plants follow the same path. Water gets the same individual treatment: each pond is hand-mixed to its own colour, darker towards the centre and lighter at the edges, rather than poured from a standard blue.

Each piece of timber in a brazier or bonfire is individually carved and painted, while rust is applied using individual strands of brush hair, and tiny cinders and flecks of ash are positioned with fine tweezers.

No two lineside huts weather in quite the same pattern. No two ponds catch the light in quite the same way. That’s not a flaw. It’s the whole point. Your piece is the only one exactly like it.

Believable Detail

Scenery That Looks Like It Belongs There

Real places aren’t perfectly tidy or uniform, and I don’t think convincing model railway scenery should be either.

Grass grows longer where nobody walks. Weeds find cracks and forgotten corners. Water collects in low ground, while rust, mud and worn surfaces appear where weather and everyday use would actually create them.

I use those small clues when building each scene, rather than simply adding weathering and vegetation for decoration. The aim is to make a piece feel as though it belongs to a larger landscape beyond the edges of its base.

Is your model railway scenery ready to place straight onto my layout?

Yes. Every piece is fully finished before it leaves the workshop, made, painted, weathered and planted, so it's ready-made model railway scenery you can place straight onto your layout with no further work.

What's the difference between handmade model railway scenery and a scenery kit?

A kit gives you unpainted parts and leaves the building, painting and weathering to you. Handmade scenery from Little World Workshop arrives complete: I do the design, building, painting, weathering and planting by hand, and, where appropriate, wiring, so you receive a finished scene rather than a project.

How much does handmade model railway scenery cost?

Workshop Originals start from £20 for smaller scenic details such as huts and ponds, rising according to size and complexity. Bespoke commissions typically start from £50. See my model railway scenery commissions page for more detail.

How long does it take to receive a piece after ordering?

Workshop Originals are made for you with a lead time of approximately 7 to 12 days. Bespoke commissions take a little longer, usually a few weeks depending on size and complexity, and I'll always give you a clear timescale before starting.

Can you recreate a real place from a photo, or commission a custom scene for my own layout?

Yes to both. I can recreate real stations, buildings, bridges and lineside scenes from photographs, and alongside my ready-made Workshop Originals, I also take on bespoke commissions designed specifically around your layout, track plan and chosen era. What scales/gauges are your scenes suitable for?

Most of my Workshop Originals are built for OO gauge (1:76 scale), the most popular UK model railway scale, which also works for 009 scale. I also take on bespoke commissions in N gauge, narrow gauge and other scales on request.

How do I fix scenery to my layout?

All pieces are on flat card bases that can be easily and quickly glued into place. Where lighting is involved, wires are included: simply drill a hole into your baseboard, feed the wires through, glue the scenic base into place, and connect the wires to an appropriate supply, typically the 12V DC supply found on most model railway controllers.

What makes your handmade scenery different from mass-produced or 3D-printed pieces?

Mass-produced and 3D-printed scenery is identical, piece after piece. Everything I make is individually hand-crafted, with subtle changes and decoration, painted and weathered by hand, so each piece, vegetation, groundwork and weathering vary naturally from one piece to the next, and no two are ever quite the same.

Can I buy your scenery on eBay or Etsy as well as your own shop?

Yes, my scenery is also available on eBay and Etsy as well as my own shop. My own shop is the cheapest place to buy, since it avoids marketplace fees, but I'm active on all three.

What materials do you use?

I build using a mix of traditional model-making materials (card, plasticard, paper, balsa and bass wood, natural materials, string, steel, copper, plastics, resin and other materials) combined with careful painting and weathering.
